Maha Chai House is a residential extension project that originated from the homeowner’s need for additional functional space. The two key programs developed through this intervention include a master bedroom on the second floor and a fitness room on the ground level—both situated within the existing rear garden area.

Upon conducting a site visit, the design team discovered that the rear portion of the house held the most potential in terms of spatial quality. It directly adjoins a large communal pond and benefits from constant natural ventilation throughout the day. However, this area remained largely underutilized due to its southwest orientation, which receives strong afternoon sunlight and results in excessive heat gain—making the outdoor space uncomfortable and rarely used.

To address this limitation, the extension design does more than simply add square meters; it seeks to resolve environmental pain points through a climate-responsive design approach. The second floor was extended to cover the rear garden, forming a shaded area beneath. This not only protects the new interior spaces but also generates a semi-outdoor zone under the eaves, reminiscent of the traditional Thai “tai thun” space—usable throughout the day.

A key design feature is the integration of a motorized operable perforated aluminum facade, allowing residents to control sunlight, airflow, and visibility as needed. The facade can be opened to embrace the breeze and surrounding views or closed to shield the interior from direct sunlight—providing adaptable environmental control.

Additionally, the design team introduced a new waterfront space by extending a deck over the communal pond. This new edge fosters a closer connection between indoor living and the surrounding natural environment, offering family members a new leisure area that redefines the experience of living within their existing home.
